EMAIL ACCESSIBILITY RESEARCH & MODULAR TEMPLATE LIBRARY
//UX • DESIGN • COPY//
THE PROBLEM
Audible.com consulted with us on a question: how can we optimize the email experience across all devices for a significant segment of our customers with accessiblity needs? To answer this question, we first needed to understand how their users interact with accessibility devices, and how that interaction translates to the inbox environment on smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. After consulting with accessibility experts, I realized this was completely uncharted territory and set out to become the web's first expert on email accessibility.
THE SOLUTION
I dove into my research head-first to collect statistics on screen reader demographics and user experiences, then compiled a list of possible optimization tactics to test within the inbox enviroment against the most popular devices, email providers, operating systems, and web browsers. Our development pros went to work on support testing and I was able to use those rendering results to compile a best practices roadmap and subsequent modular template library for Audible's ongoing in-house production.
This research and template library was used to provide internal reference for the Audible marketing teams to craft messages that offer opportunities for all users to view, understand, navigate, and interact with Audible's email content, regardless of ability.
